Stay well this winter

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful, crisp weather! The clear skies and dry roads are a boon for runners, walkers, cyclists, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

As you plan your wellness strategies for the winter season, don’t forget the many benefits that Innerfit training brings to your other activities and your quality of life. Just two sessions per week over the next few months will improve your balance, flexibility, and strength, whether you want to focus on athletic competitions come spring or simply improve your health.

Many of my clients report that doing their wellness training through the winter helps ease the cold-weather ache of arthritis and enhances the quality of their sleep.

Winter is the perfect time to focus inward, to remember or to learn for the first time how to work with your breath and to challenge your body without risking strains or injuries. I even have one client who does her winter wellness workouts bundled up in pajamas in front of her living room fireplace.

If you’d like to know more or to schedule an introductory package of 3 sessions, please call me at 530-388-8708.

Namaste,

Pete

August at the River

I’ve been spending time at the river this summer, getting out of the heat and enjoying swimming in the deep, still pools and then reading with my dog Blueberry in the shade.

Swimming is an excellent way to challenge your body and relax it at the same time. Whenever you play, float, or move in water, you are working against gentle resistance with every motion, while also focusing on breathing, while not stressing your joints. When your body is practically weightless, your spirits also rise, which is good for overall wellness.

When I work with clients, I often include a movement I call “swimming” that involves easing the legs and arms through a wide range of motion. It’s a simple move and an effective one for “unsticking” your hips and shoulders and engaging your center — the core muscles and the breath. As with all of the exercises I employ or create, we adapt the movement to the individual so that it does not cause stress in the back or any other areas of the body.

I encourage you to get into the water this summer, whether in a community pool, a lake, a safe spot on the river (watch those currents!), or even just a wading pool in your own backyard. Water helps reconnect you with your body and literally washes away some of the stresses of everyday life.

Namaste,

Pete

Managing sciatica and sciatic pain

I have personal experience with sciatica, and have developed a unique Innerfit program specifically for people with sciatic conditions. Like all Innerfit programs, it is completely personalized for the individual client, based on proven principles of yoga,  biomechanics, and physiology.

The Innerfit sciatic wellness program is a gentle conditioning series where we start with an assessment of the sciatic challenge to determine the individual course of action, including improvements in sleep position, posture, and daily activities.

We then work together to lengthen the muscles of the hamstrings (back of the leg and buttocks), glutes (buttocks), and hips, and to strengthen the lower abdominals, the lower back, and the glutes. Lengthening and strengthening are the key to improving structural integrity and a functional range of motion.

Innerfit wellness programs complement other types of treatment. If you are getting chiropractic, massage, or physical therapy, I coordinate with your health professionals to create an individual plan for optimum wellness.

Symptoms of sciatica include pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the leg, caused by compression of the sciatic nerve. It can flare up after long periods of standing or sitting, from sleeping in a less than optimal position at night, or from a sudden contraction of the muscles around the area such as when sneezing or coughing.

Be fit, be well, be active — and pain free! — in the new year

Many people use the beginning of a new year as an inspiration for creating new habits for healthy living. It’s a time of renewal and relief, as the days start to lengthen and the irregular schedules (and feasts!) of the holidays are behind us.

Innerfit Personal Wellness Training is not only ideal for people starting out with exercise for the first time, it is an excellent complement to any fitness program. Our work with breath, core, flexibility, and total-body strength and awareness provide a foundation that supports all other forms of activity, whether you go to a gym or brave the cold weather on a bicycle or golf course.

If you have been inactive for a month or longer, your joints are likely to feel a strain when you start up again in January. Innerfit will help you condition your body to avoid injury, and to relieve and prevent joint and muscle pain in a natural, progressive manner.

Innerfit is 100 percent customizable to each individual’s needs. We work one-on-one in your home or workplace to provide the right balance for each person of any age and shape. Call me at 530-388-8708 for more information about how Innerfit can help you with your wellness in the new year. Gift certificates are available.

My name is Pete Niehaus, and I am the founder of Innerfit personal wellness training. For the past 15 years, I have worked with hundreds of clients in the Indianapolis area, constantly improving and refining what Innerfit has to offer every body. I have recently relocated from Indianapolis to Grass Valley, California.

Innerfit is an integrated system for harmonizing body, movement, and breath. It provides a foundation of health and strength for every lifestyle, and complements all athletic activities as well as the movements we perform in the course of daily living. I tailor every session to the individual client, taking into account not just the abilities of the client’s individual body, but what is happening in the client’s life on that day. Together, we combine the best aspects of exercise and “innercise,” improving our wellness in the mind as well as the body.

This website proves more information about my background and Innerfit personal wellness training. I have studied yoga for almost 30 years and am a life-long practitioner of whole-being wellness. As you can imagine, I’ve done a lot of thinking about wellness and how we can achieve optimum health even in a somewhat hectic modern world. I will share these thoughts with you in this blog, as well as offer tips and suggestions for how you can incorporate Innerfit wellness techniques into your own daily routine. If you prefer to receive these updates in your email, click the Sign me up! button in the sidebar.

Innerfit personal wellness training takes place in your home, office, or other location of your choosing — when weather permits we can even work outside. The introductory course consists of three sessions and costs $150. Please call me at 530-388-8708 if you would like more information or to schedule an appointment.

I am excited to be here, exploring the river, the great hiking trails, and all the natural beauty this region has to offer. Innerfit fits perfectly with the active, healthy lifestyle that Nevada County residents embrace. I look forward to getting to know this place and its people better, contributing my own brand of wellness to the area.
